Svay Reing

The Svay Reing Individual Pupil Program (IPP) started in April 2003.  It currently supports 16 students – all poor and at-risk girls – who attend 8 different local area schools.  Svay Reing is located approximately 4 hours to the southeast of Phnom Penh by car.  The Province borders Vietnam and is only accessible from Phnom Penh by ferry which cross the Mekong River.  During the rainy season, which runs from July to November in Cambodia, many of the roads in Svay Reing are almost impassable due to standing water, mud and washed out bridges.  This makes it very difficult for many of our students to attend their schools which is often located in a distant village.  Thus, many of our Svay Reing students use part of their monthly scholarship to pay for housing at their local schools.

Ages of our students in the Svay Reing IPP range from 13 to 20.  All students are currently in grades 5 through 12. Our high school students bicycle 21/2 hours each way to attend school, scholarships ar $7.50 to $20/student.  Several of our Svay Reing students have dropped out of the CASF program at one time to work at a garment factory.  Each of these students have since returned to the program (CASF keeps its promise to support a child’s education when they leave the program for family reasons) and several are now attending university.  Every student’s individual need is continually assessed to ensure that they receive enough support to study as they wish.  Current scholarships for students in the Svay Reing IPP range from $7.50 to $20 per month and are set by our Program Director in Phnom Penh.
