Sokhym

Sokhym (age 19) recently passed her 12th grade exam and will be attending university in Phnom Penh.  One of 8 children in her family, her parents are very old and, thus, unable to provide all the support they would like to provide their children. Of the 8 children, for example, only 3 are currently enrolled in school because the family does not have enough money to cover everyone’s education expenses (Note: Cambodian students must pay for uniforms, food, supplies, transportation and extra classes if they wish to succeed to school).

Without support from CASF, Sokhym would not be able to attend university where she hopes to study accounting or management. She says her parents are very supportive of her wish to attend university. Last year, Sokhym was #5 in her class. When told about her acceptance into CASF, she broke down in tears of joy and relief (click here to read an article written about Sokhym’s acceptance into CASF’s program).  Sokhym joins an increasing number of students who are entering into CASF’s University Women’s Program which is specifically designed to support our students as they enter into the Cambodian university system.  Good luck, Sokhym!

Women in Cambodia do not enjoy equal access to education, paid employment, land ownership and other property rights. Women also suffer from poor to non-existent reproductive health services. They are generally in a disadvantaged position in both family and society.
