Thilen
Thilen (age 12) will enter the 7th grade this month at her local school in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. A student in our Kampong Cham IPP since 2003, she has a very supportive and loving family who desperately want to see her succeed in school. Thilen’s father works in Phnom Penh as a security guard, so he only sees his family when he can afford to hire a taxi to get home (Thilen’s village is about 1.5 hours away from Phnom Penh by car; occasionally he catches a ride home with CASF staff so he can visit his family more often). Thilen’s mother sells food along the highway near her home while her brother attends university in Phnom Penh.
Thilen studies English along with her other classes and is starting to speak English very well. She uses her monthly scholarship to pay for extra classes at school and to buy school supplies. Her family has even purchased a used blackboard to help her study at home! Thilen is full of fun and energy. On our visits she always entertains us with a new song. Thilen has a very good voice and presence in front of a group! |

Women in Cambodia do not enjoy equal access to education, paid employment, land
ownership and other property rights. Women also suffer from poor to non-existent
reproductive health services. They are generally in a disadvantaged position in
both family and society.
